Man Utd Draw 0-0 With Villarreal At Old Trafford
Manchester United were held to a goalless draw at Old Trafford tonight in their opening Champions League group game against Villarreal. With several key players out due to either injury or suspension, United did start the match with Christiano Ronaldo on the bench, having seemed to be recovered from his ankle operation in the summer.
It was Ronaldo who, perhaps, created United’s best chance of the evening, crossing to Jonny Evans whose header hit the post. United were also denied a clear penalty when Villarreal’s Joan Capdevila brought down Ji-Sung Park. German referee Wolfgang Stark saw differently and dismissed all shouts for a penalty - a brave man indeed at Old Trafford!
Villarreal seemed happy to cruise through their away leg, content to leave Old Trafford at 0-0. They did have a few sparkling moments in the match, most notably when Franco flicked Lopez’s cross, beating van der Sar, only to be denied by the post.
